Dear Reader,
Ernesto Valdés, Sr., my mother's father, was a significant leader in El Paso's Mexican American community back in the 1940's and 50's. Born around the turn of the century in 1896, he left a void when he passed.
As you will see, he was able to work with all people. He and his associates were ahead of their time in that way. As a politician, he was always trying to do his "best under the circumstances".

I have shared all the information provided by my cousin, the late Becky Baca. I hope you found out things you didn't know before. For non-family readers, I hope you caught a glimpse of the past and what it was like being the first and only Mexican American school board member.
Becky loved and believed in our grandfather. She felt strongly that El Paso Independent School District would benefit from recognizing his legacy. But most of all, I'm sure she felt Papatón would be extremely honored and his memory well-served by having a school named for him.
