Little did I know that this experience was a sign of things to come. Now, I get together with friends and family each Tuesday morning at Zilker Park to throw some holes of disc. I'm up to seven on the front nine. It would be great to see other stroke survivors out there, so I got to get the word out. If you know of any stroke survivors who would benefit from fresh air and exercise, please encourage them to take up Disc golf. They are welcome to meet up with us on Tuesday mornings at 9 o'clock.
When I was released from St. David's Rehab Hospital, one of the first things I remember was my friend John Russell taking me to Zilker Park where we began to play a round of disc golf. I was still in my wheelchair, mind you, so John had to push me around the uneven ground over bumps and through tall grasses. He was unfamiliar with the course, and being a beginner himself, he was a little awkward. But man oh man, did I have the time of my life. It was just good to be out on the course again, even if it meant throwing from a wheelchair with my left hand, which is not my dominant hand. All my life I have been throwing with my right, so it took some getting used to, thinking what the disc would do coming out of my left hand. I found myself wondering how the disc react when I threw it a certain way. I'm still figuring it out.

HandySports? It's because most stroke survivors are hemiplegiac, affecting either the left or the right side of their body. In my case, and with most other stroke survivors, one of the hands is spastic. Meaning it can't move naturally, calmly, or fluidly in unison with other parts of the body.
